Congratulations on winning our Photo Competition! What inspired you to start taking photos?
Thank you! It all started with a camera I received a camera as a birthday present. Thanks to this gift, I discovered my passion for photography.
Nature is my muse when taking photos. I’m captivated by its beauty and love to capture it through my lenses. Along the way, it has taken me to some amazing places and encouraged me to experiment with different light and composition techniques.
We’re noticing a nature theme! Is this a hobby?
Absolutely. I have always been interested in gardening. It truly fascinates me!
I grew up in Poland, but spent several years in the Netherlands where I worked with Helleborus plants. These are very popular here in the UK and right now is the time for their beautiful flowering.
The experience I gained in this job made me fall even in more love with gardening. It’s both a hobby and a form of relaxation for me and despite the hard work involved, there is nothing quite like tending to my garden!
What is your favourite plant?
My favourite plant has to be the Passiflora. When it blooms, it looks dazzling. The beautiful flowers of this plant close and die after 24 hours, which makes it even more majestic.
Watching my garden grow and change with each season. And what better way to start the day with a morning cup of coffee surrounded by blooming flowers?
What is your advice when it comes to gardening?
Gardening is for everyone, especially in today’s digital age. With plenty of resources available online, it’s easy to learn how to take care of plants; all you need to do is find some time to read.
My mantra for a thriving garden is simple: just good food and good water. Proper fertilisation and watering all year round are the two golden rules that will keep your garden’s blooms vibrant and plants healthy.
What’s in the pipeline for your future in gardening?
I hope to turn my passion for gardening into a career. I’m particularly interested in garden design and I would love to pursue it professionally. Many friends have encouraged me to follow this dream, and I’m determined to make it a reality!
I’m also advocating for the creation of more allotment gardens, especially in areas like Corby where access to fresh fruit and vegetables is limited. I think an initiative like this would be beneficial to the entire community.
A huge thanks to Derek, Oakley Vale’s talented and avid gardener for sharing his journey and passion with us. Stay tuned for more from Derek on all things photography. Until then, keep capturing the beauty around you, and happy gardening!
