Hello and welcome to our extra-special June blog! This month, as we’re sure you’re already aware, we celebrate Her Majesty, The Queen, becoming the first ever British Monarch to commemorate a Platinum Jubilee.
Today, we’ll cover exactly what that means – and share some of the exciting events happening across Oakley Vale and Corby. We’ll also be giving an announcement on our photo competition and sharing some feel-good community news. So, let’s get right down to it!
The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee
So, what does a Platinum Jubilee actually mean? Well, it means The Queen has given 70 years’ service to the people of the United Kingdom, the Realms and the Commonwealth. It’s important because it’s never happened before – so don’t be surprised if you see lots of vibrant street parties!
This month, we’ve been given a four-day bank holiday weekend from Thursday, 2nd to Sunday, 5th June. The period will provide an opportunity for people and communities throughout the United Kingdom to come together to celebrate the historic milestone.
One local example is Corby Town Council, who have announced plans to light a beacon in Coronation Park on the evening of Thursday, 2nd June to celebrate. The beacon is one of thousands being lit in the UK and the Commonwealth, and forms part of the official programme announced by Buckingham Palace for the weekend. Click here the read the story in full and for a timeline of events or here for all the local road closures.
And that’s not all! Corby’s ancient town centre woodlands – Hazel and Thoroughsale Woods – have also been chosen as part of a nationwide network of 70 areas to be dedicated to The Queen in celebration of the Platinum Jubilee. You can read more about that here too!
Simple Pleasures of Spring
Also this month, we wanted to give a quick update on our ‘Simple Pleasures of Spring’ photo competition and let you know that we’re extending the deadline for new submissions until Monday, 20th June. This gives you the perfect opportunity to shoot some snaps at the Platinum Jubilee celebrations and submit them with plenty of time spare.
For those of you who don’t know, our photo competition gives you an opportunity to win £50 for your photos of life in Oakley Vale. The £50 prize is matched by an equal donation to the Oakley Vale Community Association – so that’s £100 handed out each time!

Community News
Finally, we want to leave you with some feel-good community news from the month! Firstly, Corby’s Glenmoor House Care Home has been celebrating its 25th anniversary – having first opened in May 1997. There was a big party – and residents were treated to a spread and glasses of fizz, as well as some live entertainment. You can read more about the heart-warming story here.
Finally, we want to look ahead to an exciting year with Corby Town Council who have big plans for the future… These include the resurrection of the Spirit of Corby awards and the town’s first Pride celebration. To find out more about, click here.
All that’s left to say is we hope you all have a jubilant June and spend the month celebrating all the exciting Jubilee events across Oakley Vale and Corby – see you in July!
